Why the shoulder season is a different problem

A pool that is comfortable in July and unusable in May is not suffering from a lack of heating capacity. It is suffering from an unfavorable balance between what the day gives and what the night takes, and both sides of that move against you in the shoulder season.

  • Shorter days and a lower sun angle mean less energy arriving. There is simply less to collect.
  • Longer, cooler nights mean more hours of loss and a bigger temperature gap driving it.
  • Windier weather, and DOE puts a 7 mph breeze at a 300% increase in energy consumption.
  • Clearer skies in autumn especially, which increases radiative loss to the night sky.

The practical consequence is that the loss side dominates the shoulder season even more than it dominates summer, which reorders what is worth spending money on.

The order that works

1. A cover, used religiously

In the shoulder season the nights are long and the temperature gap is large, so overnight loss is at its worst exactly when the daytime gain is at its weakest. A cover is doing more work in April than it does in July.

Be honest with yourself about compliance. April evenings are dark, cold and unpleasant, and a cover that is any effort at all will not go on. A reel is what makes this survive contact with reality.

2. Block the wind

The 300% figure applies year-round and shoulder seasons are windier. This is the cheapest large intervention available and it is almost never made.

3. Accept a cooler swim

DOE recommends 78 to 80°F for active swimming. In April, holding 78°F rather than 84°F is the difference between a plausible heating bill and an implausible one — six degrees at 10 to 30% each. Choosing your number.

4. Then heat, sized to what is left

After the first three, the gap a heater has to fill is much smaller than it looked at the start — which means a smaller heater, running less. How to size it.

How many weeks is realistic?

We are not going to give you a number, because it would be invented. The honest answer depends on your latitude, your climate, your pool’s exposure and how cold a swim you will tolerate, and there is no source we can fetch that quantifies it for a residential pool.

What we can tell you is how to find out for yourself, and it is a better answer than an average:

  1. Measure your overnight drop in the shoulder season specifically, not in July. Dusk and dawn, a foot down.
  2. Measure it again with the cover on, on a comparable night. The difference is what the cover buys you.
  3. Work out what closing the remaining gap costs using the running cost calculator.
  4. Decide whether those weeks are worth that money. Which is a personal question and not one a website can answer for you.

Where the season stops being worth extending

There is a point where this becomes a bad deal, and it is worth naming. As air temperature falls, three things worsen together: the temperature gap grows, the loss runs around the clock rather than mostly overnight, and a heat pump’s efficiency falls. Winter costs escalate faster than the temperature difference suggests, and that arithmetic is the reason most people should aim at April and October rather than at January.

2. What makes it stick in April

Blue Wave Solar Cover Reel

A reel is the single highest-leverage purchase in this whole category and almost nobody frames it that way. Every DOE saving figure assumes the cover is on the pool when the pool is not in use. A cover that takes two people and five minutes comes off on Friday and goes back on in October. A reel turns that into thirty seconds alone, which is the difference between the savings existing and not.

If you are heating a pool with electricity, this is the shape of machine to do it with. A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, and at the assumptions we publish it delivers a million BTU into the water for about a fifth of what an electric resistance heater costs to deliver the same. It is slower than gas and it fades as the air gets colder, which is exactly when you want it — that trade is the whole decision.

Note the phrasing: with ample sunlight it can boost temperature by as much as 15 degrees. That is a cumulative ceiling reached over days of good sun, not a figure you will see in an afternoon.

Questions people actually ask

How can I extend my pool season?
In this order: a cover used every night, a windbreak, a lower target temperature, and only then a heater sized to what is left. The shoulder season is dominated by loss rather than by a lack of capacity, so the loss-side measures do most of the work.
Are solar panels good for extending the pool season?
Less than you would hope, and this is where our usual recommendation reverses. April and October are exactly when there is least sun to collect — short days, low angle, more cloud. A heat pump is also weaker in cold air but still delivers on demand, which is what a shoulder season needs.
How many extra weeks will a solar cover give me?
We are not going to invent a number, because it depends on your latitude, climate, exposure and how cold a swim you will accept. Measure your own overnight drop with and without the cover on comparable shoulder-season nights — that is a better answer than any published average.
