Solar cover reels for above-ground pools
Most reels are built for one kind of above-ground pool and say, in small print, that they will not fit the other. Start there, not with the price.
Quick picks
Ranked on whether each reel fits the pool it claims to, on what its listing actually publishes, and on what you still have to buy — not on testing, which we do not do.

When a reel matters on an above-ground pool
The Department of Energy puts the heating-cost saving from covering a pool when it is not in use at 50 to 70%. Every word of that figure depends on the cover actually going on. A solar blanket that takes two people and a wrestling match to deploy stops going on within a few weeks, and from then on it saves nothing at all.
That is the whole case for a reel, and our main reels page makes it in full. On a small above-ground pool the case is weaker: the cover is lighter and often a one-person job without help. It gets strong again on the larger ones — an 18 ft or wider round pool carries a cover that is awkward to handle alone — and on any pool where the cover has already stopped going on. This page is about the part that page leaves open: which reel fits an above-ground pool, because most of them only fit one kind.
How we judged these
Five criteria, in the order they rule reels in or out:
- Pool type. Frame and soft-sided pools on one side, steel- and resin-wall pools on the other. Several reels exclude one group outright, and that settles the matter before anything else does.
- Width. A reel has to span your pool. The maximum is published for every pick here, and some are sold in fixed widths you must match.
- Mounting, and getting it clear to swim. Lift-and-swing, top-rail and frame-attached designs behave differently beside a real pool, and a deck changes which ones work.
- What is not in the box. No reel here includes the cover, and one does not include the tube that spans the pool.
- What the listing will tell you. Materials, bearings, warranty, cover-thickness limits. Some publish these; some publish almost nothing. We say which.
Start with your pool, not the reel
The single most useful thing to know is that the reel market splits along the same line as the pool market. The Sun2Solar above-ground reel states in capitals that it is not compatible with Intex, Bestway, Coleman or soft-sided pools. Horizon’s 24 ft reel says the same about soft-sided pools. Those designs lift off and swing away on a rigid pool wall, and a frame or inflatable pool does not give them one.
| Reel | Pool type | Max width | To swim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun2Solar Above-Ground | Round/oval, not Intex/Bestway/soft-sided | 24 ft | Pivots away |
| Intex 28051E | Rectangular frame pools | 16 ft | Not stated |
| Feherguard Premium | Round and oval | 30 ft (4 sizes) | Lifts off, swings away |
| GLI Whirlwind | Mounts on the top rail | 18 ft (this width) | Not described |
| Swimline 52000 | Above-ground, socket mount | Set by the tube kit | Not stated |
Every entry is read from the product's own retail listing on 17 September 2026. Where a listing does not say something, the table says so rather than guessing.
So: if you own an Intex or Bestway rectangular frame pool, the Intex 28051E is built for it and the lift-and-swing reels are not. If you own a steel-wall round or oval pool, the reverse is true. Owners of Intex and Bestway round frame pools are the group this category serves worst: the Intex reel is rectangular-only, and the round reels exclude their pools.
Width: measure the right dimension
A reel’s tube spans the pool across its width, and the cover rolls onto it along the length. For a round pool the width is simply the diameter. For an oval pool it is the short side, which is why an 18 by 33 ft oval pool needs an 18 ft reel, not a 33 ft one.
Then check two things beyond the headline number. Reels sold in fixed widths — the GLI here is the 18 ft version — must match your pool. And telescopic reels have a working range, not just a maximum: Horizon’s 24 ft reel, for example, adjusts to 19 to 24 ft, so it is the wrong buy for a 15 ft pool despite being “up to” 24.
Mounting, decks and getting it out of the way
Lift-and-swing reels, the Sun2Solar and Feherguard here, sit at the pool edge and pivot or lift clear so nobody swims under a tube. Sun2Solar specifies its 24 ft reel system for pools without a deck around the edge, because the swing needs somewhere to go; its above-ground reel listing does not address decks, so check before buying if your pool has one.
Top-rail reels like the GLI mount on the pool’s top rail. That keeps them off the ground but asks the rail to carry them, which suits a solid steel or resin rail and rules out frame pools.
Frame-attached reels like the Intex clamp to a rectangular frame. Simple, but the frame and the reel have to match.
What is not in the box
The cover, always. Every reel in this roundup is sold without one. The above-ground cover picks cover that half, and fit matters more than thickness on a soft-sided pool.
On the Swimline, the tube. The HydroTools 52000 is the lowest-priced reel system on this page, and its listing says clearly that the tube kit is not included: you pick a kit sized to your pool and buy it separately. That makes the listed price the price of the ends, straps and hardware rather than of a working reel. It may still be the cheapest route once the kit is added — the point is to price the kit before deciding. Generic “reel ends only” kits sold by other sellers work the same way and are worth reading just as carefully.
The picks, briefly
Sun2Solar Above-Ground Pool Solar Reel System is the default for a steel-wall round or oval pool up to 24 ft. It publishes its materials — resin and commercial-grade aluminum — and nylon bearings, which is more than most, and it is the most direct about what it does not fit.
Intex 28051E is the answer for rectangular frame pools from 9 to 16 ft wide, and it is sold by Amazon itself. Its listing says almost nothing about construction, which we note rather than paper over.
Feherguard Premium is for pools wider than 24 ft, up to 30, with the longest warranty here at five years. It is also the most expensive reel on the page by some distance.
GLI Whirlwind is the all-aluminum build with a sealed bearing, for owners who would rather mount on the top rail than stand a reel beside the pool.
Swimline HydroTools 52000 is the budget route, with the tube-kit caveat above.
The order to buy in
- Identify your pool type. Frame or soft-sided, or rigid steel/resin wall. That decides which half of this list is open to you.
- Measure the width — diameter for round, short side for oval — and check whether a deck surrounds the edge.
- Choose the cover, and note its thickness and width.
- Then choose the reel that fits the pool type, the width and the cover. If its listing publishes no thickness limit, find out before pairing a 16-mil cover.
A reel is the part of pool heating that costs the least and changes the most, because it is what turns a cover you own into a cover you use. If you are working through the rest of the problem, every loss path ranked by effect per dollar and the solar heaters sized for above-ground pools are the next two pages to read.
Every pick, in detail
What each one publishes, what is good and bad about it, and — the section this category usually omits — what we could not judge without owning one.

Sun2Solar Above-Ground Pool Solar Reel System
The reel to buy for a steel-wall round or oval above-ground pool up to 24 ft wide. Its listing publishes more of what matters than most: corrosion-resistant resin and commercial-grade aluminum tubing, nylon bearings for one-person cranking, and a design that pivots out of the way to swim. It is also blunt about the one thing that rules it out — it does not fit Intex, Bestway, Coleman or any soft-sided pool.
Best for A steel-wall round or oval above-ground pool up to 24 ft wide
| Pool width | Most above-ground pools up to 24 ft wideThe manufacturer publishes no retrievable specification sheet; figure is as listed at retail. | Retail listing |
|---|---|---|
| Not compatible with | Intex, Bestway, Coleman or soft-sided poolsStated on the listing in capitals. It is the specification that decides whether this reel is an option for you at all. | Retail listing |
| Construction | Corrosion-resistant resin with commercial-grade aluminum tubing | Retail listing |
| Bearings | High-strength nylon | Retail listing |
| To swim | Pivots out of the way | Retail listing |
- Publishes its materials and bearing type, which many reels do not
- One-person operation, and it pivots clear of the water to swim
- Covers the most common steel-wall pool sizes, up to 24 ft
- Rules out every Intex, Bestway, Coleman and soft-sided pool by its own listing
- States no maximum cover thickness — Sun2Solar's other 24 ft reel is limited to 8-12 mil covers
- Solar cover not included
- Whether it takes a 16-mil cover, which this listing does not address
- Whether it needs a deck-free pool edge, as Sun2Solar's companion reel does
- How the resin ends hold up across several seasons of UV
These need a unit in hand across a season. We do not have one, so we do not have an opinion worth printing on them.

Intex 28051E Solar Cover Reel
The reel for the pools the others exclude. Lift-and-swing reels built for steel-wall pools say outright that they do not fit Intex, Bestway or soft-sided pools; this one is made for rectangular frame pools from 9 to 16 ft wide. It is an interlocking aluminum shaft with a locking crank, and it is the least expensive reel here that works out of the box — the one cheaper listing on this page needs a tube kit bought separately. It is rectangular-only, so a round frame pool is out of luck.
Best for An Intex-style rectangular frame pool, 9 to 16 ft wide
| Pool type | Rectangular frame pools, 9 to 16 ft wideThe manufacturer publishes no retrievable specification sheet; figure is as listed at retail. | Retail listing |
|---|---|---|
| Shaft | Interlocking aluminumThe manufacturer publishes no retrievable specification sheet; figure is as listed at retail. | Retail listing |
| Crank | Hand crank with a lock to stop it unrollingThe manufacturer publishes no retrievable specification sheet; figure is as listed at retail. | Retail listing |
| Included | Reel only — solar cover not included | Retail listing |
- Made for the frame pools that steel-wall reels exclude
- Interlocking aluminum shaft and a locking crank, not plastic end pieces
- The least expensive reel here that is complete out of the box
- Rectangular frame pools only — no round frame pools
- Tops out at 16 ft wide
- The solar cover is not included, as the listing states plainly
- Build quality and how the crank holds up
- Whether it fits frame pools from other brands
- Warranty coverage, which we could not retrieve
These need a unit in hand across a season. We do not have one, so we do not have an opinion worth printing on them.

GLI Whirlwind Above-Ground Aluminum Solar Reel
The all-aluminum option. GLI describes structural professional-grade aluminum, a sealed high-strength nylon bearing and one-person operation, and it mounts on the pool's top rail rather than standing beside it. That mounting is the trade: it suits a solid top rail and is the wrong reel for a frame pool, and the listing is a single width, so buy the one that matches your pool.
Best for A steel- or resin-wall above-ground pool with a solid top rail
| Price shown for | 18 ft wideSold in various widths. The live price and photograph on this page are for the 18 ft version — match the width to your pool. | Retail listing |

| Construction | Structural professional-grade aluminumThe manufacturer publishes no retrievable specification sheet; figure is as listed at retail. | Retail listing |
| Bearing | Sealed, high-strength nylon | Retail listing |
| Mounting | On the top rail of the poolCrank mounting socket and hood removal are described as easy; the listing does not describe a swing-away. | Retail listing |
- Aluminum structure rather than plastic end pieces
- Sealed nylon bearing for one-person cranking
- Top-rail mounting keeps it off the ground around the pool
- One width per listing — order the one that matches your pool
- Top-rail mounting needs a rail that can carry it; wrong for frame pools
- No warranty term on the listing, and the solar cover is not included
- How much load a resin top rail tolerates over seasons
- How quickly it clears the water before a swim
- Warranty coverage, which the listing does not state
These need a unit in hand across a season. We do not have one, so we do not have an opinion worth printing on them.

Swimline HydroTools 52000 Above-Ground Solar Reel System
The lowest price on this page, with the most important asterisk. The listing is clear that the tube kit is not included — you choose one sized to your pool and buy it separately — so the price you see is for the ends, straps and hardware, not a reel you can use out of the box. Sold by Amazon, with a one-year guarantee. Worth it if you price the tube kit first and the total still wins.
Best for A budget reel, once you have priced the tube kit for your pool
| Included | Straps and hardware; tube kit NOT includedThe tube kit sets the reel's span and is chosen to match your pool. Until you add one, this is not a working reel. | Retail listing |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting | Socket mountableThe manufacturer publishes no retrievable specification sheet; figure is as listed at retail. | Retail listing |
| Guarantee | 1 year against manufacturing defects | Retail listing |
- The lowest listed price for a reel system here
- Straps and attachment hardware in the box
- Sold by Amazon, with a one-year guarantee
- Tube kit sold separately — the listed price is not the price of a working reel
- You must match the tube kit to your pool yourself
- Little published build detail beyond 'non-corrosive'
- The total cost once a tube kit for your pool is added
- Which tube kits fit — the listing points to its description for that
- Mid-span sag on wider pools
These need a unit in hand across a season. We do not have one, so we do not have an opinion worth printing on them.
