Bestway solar pool cover review

A perfectly reasonable cover with a genuinely confusing name. The number on the box is not the diameter of the pool it fits.

The naming problem, first, because it costs people a return

Bestway’s Flowclear solar covers are named with a size that is deliberately smaller than the pool they fit. The 58252 is sold as a 14-foot cover, and its compatibility list includes 15-foot Fast Set pools, 14-foot Power Steel and Steel Pro MAX pools, and 13-foot Steel Pro and Power Steel pools.

That is not an error and it is not a cheat. A solar cover on a soft-sided pool has to float inside the wall, on the water, not stretch over the rim the way a winter cover does. A cover cut to the nominal pool diameter would ride up the wall and buckle. So the sheet is cut undersize on purpose, and the number in the product name describes the sheet rather than the pool.

What is published

Reading the current listings on 6 September 2026, Bestway’s Flowclear covers are polyethylene bubble film, sold across the round sizes that match its own pool range, with 18-foot round versions among the larger options. The listings describe the cover as creating a greenhouse effect and as keeping water and heat in and debris out, and note that it slows the evaporation caused by dry winds and the free-chlorine loss caused by UV.

There is no published mil rating, which puts it in exactly the same position as the Intex equivalent and, frankly, most of this category. There is no specification sheet we could retrieve. What is published is a fit list, and for this product the fit list is the specification that matters.

The chlorine point is real and usually skipped

Buried in Bestway’s own listing language is a claim worth pulling out, because it is the most under-discussed benefit of covering a pool: UV destroys free chlorine. A cover shading the water slows that, which is why the Department of Energy’s cover figures include a 35 to 60% reduction in chemical consumption alongside the heating saving.

On a small above-ground pool the chemical saving can be a larger share of the running cost than the heat is, because there is not much water to heat in the first place. It does not usually make the buying decision by itself, but it belongs in the arithmetic and it is almost always left out.

Both are read from current manufacturer and retail listings on 6 September 2026. Neither company publishes a specification sheet. The naming difference is the practical one: an Intex cover is ordered by pool diameter, a Bestway cover by its own sheet size against a fit list.

There is no meaningful case for buying one over the other on performance, and nothing published would support such a case if you wanted to make it. Buy the one cut for the pool you own. The Intex review is here.

When to skip both and buy a pool-brand cover

The own-brand covers are thin. If you have a large Power Steel or Steel Pro MAX pool — the ones that are effectively small inground pools in a steel frame — the calculation shifts, because at that volume you are fighting a real heat-loss number and you will want the cover for more than two seasons.

At that point buy an oversized rectangular or round pool-brand cover and cut it down. It is more work once and cheaper per year after that, and cutting a cover down is genuinely straightforward — scissors, and cut it a little inside the water line rather than outside it.

What we could not assess

The thickness, since none is published. How one full hot season treats the film. And whether the fit list is conservative or optimistic at its edges — a cover that fits three different nominal diameters across three pool families is fitting at least one of them less well than the others, and nothing published says which.

What we would say plainly: this is a fine product being sold under a confusing name, and almost every complaint you will read about it is a sizing complaint rather than a quality one. Read the fit list and most of the risk goes away.

Bestway Flowclear Solar Pool Cover
1. The one being reviewed

Bestway Flowclear Solar Pool Cover

Bestway's answer to the Intex cover, and the same logic applies: it exists to fit Bestway's own above-ground pools, and fit is the thing that matters on a soft-sided pool. Buy it if you own the pool it was made for. There is no reason to buy it for anything else.

What is good
  • Matches Bestway pool diameters without cutting
  • Inexpensive enough to treat as a consumable
What is not
  • Thin, like every own-brand above-ground cover
  • Not a sensible buy for a pool it was not sized for
What we could not assess
  • Published thickness — none is stated in a form we could retrieve
  • One-season durability in a hot climate

These need a unit in hand across a season. We do not have one, so we do not have an opinion worth printing on them.

Intex Easy Set Solar Cover
2. If you own an Intex pool instead

Intex Easy Set Solar Cover

Made to fit Intex's own above-ground pools, which is the entire reason to buy it: on a soft-sided pool, a cover that matches the frame diameter is worth more than a thicker cover that does not. It is a thin cover and it will not last like a 12-mil blanket, but on a 5,000-gallon above-ground pool the physics are in your favor anyway, because there is far less water to move.

What is good
  • Actually fits the pool it is made for, which most generic rounds do not
  • Cheap enough to replace on the schedule a thin cover needs
  • On a small pool the same sunlight moves the temperature several times faster
What is not
  • Thin. Expect a season or two, not five
  • Sized to Intex diameters, so it is a poor buy for anything else
What we could not assess
  • Actual thickness — Intex publishes no mil rating we could retrieve
  • How it holds up to the sun in a hot climate over one full season
  • Whether the fit is as close on the metal-frame pools as on the Easy Sets

These need a unit in hand across a season. We do not have one, so we do not have an opinion worth printing on them.

Sun2Solar 1200 Series Crystal Clear
3. If you want years rather than seasons

Sun2Solar 1200 Series Crystal Clear Solar Cover

The value pick, and the one whose logic actually holds up. A clear cover transmits more sunlight into the body of the pool instead of absorbing it at the surface, and 12 mil is the point where lifespan stops being the limiting factor. Bob Vila measured this and the 16-mil blue at the same 4 to 5 degrees in an hour, so you are paying less for the same measured result and giving up some years of service life.

Daytime solar gain

4 to 5 degrees F in one hour

Claimed by Bob Vila, measured across all covers in their group. Conditions: One hour under 2pm sun on 89 to 92 degree F days. Source

What is good
  • Clear transmits more light into the water instead of stopping it at the surface
  • 12 mil is the sweet spot: real service life without 16-mil bulk
  • Cheaper than the 16-mil tier with no measured heating penalty
What is not
  • Shorter published lifespan tier than 16 mil
  • A clear cover shows algae and debris more obviously, which some people dislike
What we could not assess
  • Whether clear genuinely outlasts or under-lasts blue in the same thickness
  • Real-world tear resistance at a pool with rough edges
  • How much the clear material clouds over a season of UV

These need a unit in hand across a season. We do not have one, so we do not have an opinion worth printing on them.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Why is my Bestway solar cover smaller than my pool?
Because it is meant to be. A solar cover floats on the water inside the pool wall rather than stretching over the rim, so the sheet is cut undersize on purpose and the number in the product name describes the sheet, not the pool. Match your pool to the compatibility list in the listing rather than to the name.
How thick is a Bestway Flowclear solar cover?
Bestway publishes no mil rating for these that we could retrieve. The material is described as polyethylene bubble film. Treat it as a light-gauge cover and expect a season or two rather than the three to four a 12-mil pool-brand blanket is put at.
Can I use a Bestway cover on an Intex pool?
Only if the diameter genuinely matches, and the naming makes that harder to check than it should be. Fit is the entire reason to buy an own-brand cover, so if you own an Intex pool, buy the Intex cover or an oversized pool-brand cover you cut down yourself.
Is a Bestway solar cover worth it?
On a Bestway pool, yes — it fits, it is inexpensive, and a cover that fits is worth more than a thicker one that does not. On a large Power Steel or Steel Pro MAX pool it is worth stepping up to a cut-down pool-brand cover instead, because at that volume you want more than two seasons out of it.
